Penhurst Area - What's it like?

Looks like a handy place for the train but I would like people's opinion on the neighbourhood in general? We are a couple with a 1 year old child so need somewhere safe and not too far on the train from CBD.

 

For CBD I am assuming Central is the best station?

 

Other areas similar distance to look at would be really appreciated.
