What to bring?

    Recommended Posts

    Hi guys

We're due to be in Sydney just after xmas, beginning of January. I'm just trying to work out what to bring and what to leave. Is it worth bringing our Hotpoint fridge and freezer? Our 40" tv and our washing machine? I'm not sure if any of these things will even work over there and apart from the washing machine which is only just coming up to a year old everything else is 5 years old!

    Many thanks Cathy xx

    Hi Cathy

It will all work, but your TV's digital tuner probably won't, so you will only be able to get terrestrial TV on it, or use an Aussie set-top box (cheap) for digital free-to-air, or a Foxtel box if you're interested in that anyway

You may hear stuff from people about fridges "not being made for the climate" or Aussie washing machines being "more water efficient". Don't believe any of that, if the items are good then bring them as shipping will be a lot cheaper than replacing. "Black" goods (TVs, games, Hifi etc) are quite cheap here, but "white" goods (washers, fridges etc) aren't, for some reason

You will need to change plugs to Aussie ones, obviously.

Hey & don't forget to haggle, it's amazing how much independent stores ( franchises) rather than big chains will knock off ..... We bought a 50 inch LG 3 D TV last year & got a whopping discount, we always ask for discount even on small electrical appliances, had to buy a new Dyson the other week again got discount, the same with the juicer ..... Furniture ..... just try it on, what have you got to lose, the member who told me to haggle (before we arrived here) is deeply appreciated, they've saved us a fortune .....

The girls my oh works with are Australian & were shocked when he told them we always ask for discount .....

It think with the fridge freezer it has to be a certain reading of gases, will see if I can find out, most new models should be ok, just clean it within an inch of its life, try to leave the door slightly ajar, someone said tea bags help to stop it going mouldy .... I didn't do his because of importing tea, it has to be declared .... also if you have the owners manual (even a PDF if you have lost the original) and warranty .... proof of purchase .... We just stuck it on one of the shelves .... No issues and it is still working now .....

Actually will start a new thread about shipping which hopefully will help new members moving to OZ

We only brought 5 suitcases, sold everything, there are plus and minus sides to it. Bring coat hangers, they cost a fortune here

Lol@ Kate - yes hangers are pricey here. Agree that white goods/appliances are quite expensive too but there are some useful sites out there like Freecycle that lists things locally that people are willing to give away for free. Worth it to get yourself 'set up' with the basics until you can afford to buy your own.

Coat hangers cost a fortune ? Honestly I can''t remember the last time I bought coat hangers, I think it may have been from a $2 shop. Good check list here http://menthatmove.com/moving-house-checklist/ although nothing on moving overseas. I have shipped containters from Indonesia before.

Please bring a cockney accent :)

You have been lucky then, as we threw out hundreds when we moved here and now we are still buying them but they cost $10 for 10, may have a look in the $2 shops then.

I have asked when buying clothes if I can keep the coat hangers and they always say no.

Hi island boo and welcome, i've been in sydney for 4 weeks and so far so good, and for the record you're able to buy packs of coathangers in kmart for $4.50! :P

Any questions you have fire away, they're a friendly bunch on here. The best advice i can give is do as much research before you get here regarding areas etc or whether you're renting or buying etc. With regard to your dab radio i don't know but i don't see why it wouldn't work the tv's are digital and they sell dab radios! :)

    Sorry, only just seen this

Aus DAB radios work on a different system called "DAB+". I think there are radios sold in the UK that can pick up these signals, but most don't. We chucked ours (a Pure). I keep meaning to buy a local one but haven't got round to it yet. TBH I mostly used our DAb radios in the UK for Radio 6 and Test Match Special, neither of which apply here. There are dozens of stations on FM so something for most tastes
