1. Rockpool Bar & Grill

CP's Burger of Choice: Full Blood Wagyu Hamburger ($24)

A CBD gem, Rockpool Bar & Grill has always been a must-visit place for any local or visiting foodie. And the Wagyu Hamburger is by far one of the favourites on the bar menu. Its Blackmore patty is thick, juicy, and cooked as well as every other dish on the menu, served with bacon, gruyere cheese and zucchini pickle. The hand cut chips ($12) or the onion rings ($9) are a must, as is this burger.

Lunch Mon-Fri, Dinner Mon-Sat; 66 Hunter St, Sydney; 02 8078 1900; www.rockpool.com

2. Jamie's Italian

CP's Burger of Choice: Burger Italiano ($19.50)

Jamie Oliver’s at it again, this time in the CBD, offering simple, rustic Italian food to anyone who's eager to queue. And then there's the Burger Italiano, a giant, wooden-skewered bun impressively divided by Wagga Wagga patty, salami, lettuce, tomato salsa, dill pickles, fontina cheese, fried onions and chilli. Best bet, if you can, is to head in at lunch to beat the larger evening line.

3. The Forresters

CP's Burger of Choice: Cheeseburger ($18)

The Forresters likes its menu as eclectic as its Surry Hills clientele. But indulging in one of their cheeseburgers is as simple as popping in for a pint of Coopers Pale on a Sunday afternoon and feels just as good going down. The patty served with cheddar cheese, pickles, onion rings and mustard mayo, not to mention a mountain of crinkle-cut chips, make the perfect companion for people watching.

Mon-Wed 12pm-12am, Thu-Sat 12pm-1am, Sun 12-10pm; 336 Riley Street, Surry Hills; 02 9212 3035; www.forresters.com.au

4. The Fish Shop

CP's Burger of Choice: Fish Burger ($18)

Fish burgers are often underrated or over fried. This crumbed burger from Merivale's newish Potts Point restaurant, The Fish Shop, is nothing but a tasty catch. Served in a soft steamed bun with bacon, mayo and just the right amount of chilli, it goes superbly with a James Squire Sundowner ($7), or if you want to really push the boat out, the Jamaican Grog cocktail ($16).

5. Moo Gourmet Burgers

CP's Burger of Choice: Greek Lamb Burger ($16.50)

Influenced by the pioneers of Australia's first milk bar and New Zealand's restaurant trade, Moo continues to combine classic with craze. Lamb burgers are very much 'in' right now, and the 100% free range Saltbush lamb patty with oregano, garlic and rosemary, tomato, baby spinach and tzatziki makes a delicious addition to this Bondi Beach family favourite's menu.

HURRICANES.jpg

6. Hurricane's Grill

CP's Burger of Choice: Hurricane Burger ($19)

When you eat at Hurricane's down at Bondi Beach you know what you're in for: meat. The Hurricane Burger is no exception to this rule, packing in 300g of basted and chargrilled lean beef into each signature dish before serving with chips or baked potato and sour cream with chives. It's certainly a preferable spring bite if you like a generous serving of beach with your burger.

Mon-Fri 5.30pm-late, Sat [lunch] 12-3pm [dinner] 5pm-late, Sun 12pm-late; 130 Roscoe Street, Bondi Beach; 02 9130 7101; www.hurricanesgrill.com.au

7. BenBry Burgers

CP's Burger of Choice: Aussie Burger ($11.50)

BenBry Burgers in Manly comes with two things: a worthwhile wait and the guarantee that your burger will be the “healthiest, high protein, low fat burger you'll eat”. The Aussie beef burger with cheddar cheese, streaky bacon, fried egg, beetroot, lettuce, tomato, red onion, BenBry aioli and tomato sauce should also come with the guarantee of total, belly-filled satisfaction.

8. Burger Fuel

CP's Burger of Choice: Bastard ($12.90)

Unashamedly Kiwi, this burger isn't afraid to challenge a grumbling stomach. Whether it's the 1/3 pounds of pure grass fed NZ beef with melted cheddar, bacon, beetroot, avocado, salad, relish, the famous aioli and a sweet slice of mango, or simply the have-at-me name, we're game. For first timers, the Kumara fries ($5.90) are definitely worth trying, but with the Bastard's sweetness, the spud variety is more suited ($4.50).

Sun-Thu 11am-10pm, Fri-Sat 11am-11pm; 172 King Street, Newtown; 02 9519 4700; www.burgerfuel.com

9. The Burger Joint

CP's Burger of Choice: Tandoori Burger ($9.90)

This Darlinghurst one-stop-burger-shop offers an array of genuinely mouth-watering options, as well as delivery to your door or the Darlo Bar across the road. The Tandoori Burger with grilled and tandoori marinated chicken, smothered in raita, is a top notch creamy choice if you fancy something a little different to whet your appetite. When you're offered fries ($3-$6), say yes, and grab a complimentary aioli while you're at it.

10. Grill'd

CP's Burger of Choice: Garden Goodness ($11.50)

It's nice to see vegetarian options getting a little love, and the Garden Goodness at Grill'd is an all-round winner with a quality veggie patty, succulent beetroot, avocado, salad, relish, tasty cheese and herbed mayo. Proud of its fresh produce and friendly staff, Grill'd's shining feature among earth-loving kin, however, is arguably the Local Matters jars; donating $500 a month to worthwhile causes, chosen by you.

Sun-Thu 11am-10pm, Fri-Sat 11-12am; 241 Crown Street, Darlinghurst; 02 9380 4800; www.grilld.com.au

Grill'd is a pretty good chain - there are a few of them around

We have one up in Cairns, I liked their burgers but not the seasoning they put on the chips/fries
