Default Re: The Rocks, Sydney

It's hard to imagine Sydney without The Rocks, but it almost happened. The whole area was scheduled for redevelopment in the early 1970s. There were to be 6 large tower buldings north of the Cahill Expressway, total redevelopment of the area bounded by George St, the Cahill Expressway, the Bradfield Highway and Argyle St and of the area bounded by George St, Argyle Street, Kendall Lane and Playfair St. The entire western side of George Street from the Cahill Expressway to Playfair St was to be demolished. Cadman's Cottage and three other buildings were to be spared.

As we know, it didn't happen. In 1971 the Builders’ Labourers Federation stepped in and placed a total ban on the scheme claiming that "residents who will be displaced by the project will not be adequately compensated and that many historically significant buildings will be needlessly destroyed."

The unions, in particular "blue collar" ones, quite often get a bad press, but Sydney is a better place today thanks to Jack Mundey and the BLF Green Bans.
