How to play avi movies on laptop on television?

i have a couple of movies which r in avi format....and i want to c them on my television.But the problem is that when i connect my laptop to the television usin a vga and audio cable..evrythin works fine exept d muvy dosent play on any player..it plays on d laptop but not on d tv..the player window is seen but only the movie video is not seen on the television...plz help
