Default Please help!!

Hi there everybody! I'm new to this site, so please be gentle with me LoL!!
I live in Sheffield, England, UK & i'm doing my family tree & i've got stuck on 1 family member. So i'm hoping you lovely people out there can help, if not then at least i've tried, here goes.
I'm looking for the family members of, George Henry Cartledge, who is my great uncle, brother to my grandad. He was the eldest, i believe, of 6 children. He was born in Sheffield, England, UK. His brothers & sisters names are, (if this helps), Hilda, Mary, Joseph, Elizabeth & Jack, (my grandad). He was born in 1894. He married Emma Flood-McLoughlin in Nottingham, England, UK, on 02/08/1919. Some time during the 1930's they emmigrated to Australia, where, i don't know. I hope this is where you can hopefully help me.
If this person rings any bells to anyone, please get in touch.
I'll keep my fingers crossed in the mean time!
Thanks Jenny Broadbent nee Cartledge XX

I don't think there is going to be an easy answer to this. Yes, there are records held by government departments, but as we are talking about something that happened less than 100 years ago, you might find that certain records are not available due to privacy regulations.

You could try the phonebook, but that would only find descendants with the same surname and, as a result, you might miss what you are looking for. Worth a look though - if you have time to look through the list - there are 402 entries for Cartledge http://www.whitepages.com.au/wp/

Ther are some records held by the National Archives of Australia: RecordSearch - National Archives of Australia These may or may not be any help, depending on what your relations did in their lifetime. There are quite a few war records, applications and submissions to government departments, and things like patents on here, but only some of them have been digitised.

Birth, Death and Marriage records are kept by the different state and territory governments, which means that, unless you know what state they went to, you'll have to repeat the same search several times to get a result. You may also find that Birth and Marriage records less than 100 years old can only be viewed on written application by a family member or legal representative, although Death records up to the early 1950s might be available. Here's a link to the New South Wales site as an example of what's out there: NSW Registry of Births Deaths & Marriages

There are quite a few shipping lists available, but in order to search these, you would have to know the port, ship and date.

What was his occupation? If you're lucky it might lead you somewhere. I managed to find a record of a family member who came out to Australia in the 1890s, but in my case, I knew he settled in Victoria, so I had somewhere to start. I searched the Deaths Index (on microfiche, it wasn't computerised) over about a 20 year period and found him (he had a very unusual middle name, which helped) and found that he was a Minister in the Presbyterian Church. As ministers in those days were important members of the local community, I did a bit more digging and found out quite a bit about him and even got copies of a couple of photographs from a local history that was published about 30 years ago. I also found out that, although he married, there were no descendants.

Hopefully you'll have some good luck.
